OAP makes a gym using paint pots and old tights to work out during lockdown

Tony Robertson, 73, has been using his wife Lisbeth’s old tights, pots of paint and buckets of sand to keep fit during the coronavirus lockdown in a homemade gym in their back garden in Buckstone, Edinburgh.

The grandfather-of-three and retired electrician, who goes by Tonyvator online, has been posting his workout videos on the internet since the lockdown first started with the help of Lis, 70, who films him as he exercises.

Tony, who also enjoys golf and cycling, exercises for his online videos two or three days a week for roughly 12 to 30 minutes each time.

His at-home gym gear includes a punchbag, made from a kitbag filled with old sheets and towels, and paint tins that he uses for upping his lunge and squat game.

He also uses a pair of Lis’s old tights for stretching exercises.

Waste not, want not indeed!

On the subject of his at-home gym, Tony said: ‘It’s made me get out into that garden each day.

‘I’ve been very fit throughout my life and I play golf, but I’ve had two new hips and two knee replacements.

‘The equipment really helps me, you can do lots of things with them and they help your muscles. I find it great.

‘I’ve also got ropes which I put round a tree and I use to swing the ropes in each hand.’

As if all this wasn’t impressive enough, Tony also runs 200 laps back and forth across his ten-metre wide garden in the mornings – which adds up to a distance of about 2km.

He then does his own personal workout sessions which take around 45 minutes and include cardio and muscular exercises.

Proud wife Lis said: ‘Primarily he’s a golfer and on the days he doesn’t he goes to the gym or on a bike ride, but having him doing the gym stuff in the garden has been a blessing because he does things for himself and we pick things to do for other people.

‘Being in lockdown at first can be a novelty but then people start thinking “what can we do?”.

‘Him going outside has been absolutely great and without a doubt it’s made a difference for him – we’ve been lucky as well because the weather’s been good.

‘Because we go outside and do a walk, he’s quite surprised at how many people recognise him. They say “oh you’re Mr Tonyvator”.

‘He’s pretty remarkable for the things he’s done.’
