The Royals Might Be Getting A ‘Diversity Czar’ To Coach Them On Not Being Racist

If 2020 was a Great Garbage Fire, 2021 has been a baptism of fire for the Royal Family. Having swept the accusations lobbied at Prince Andrew regarding his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein swiftly under the rug, theirs was an attitude of “keep calm and carry on.” But when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a tell-all interview that exposed not only the mental health struggles Markle had been battling, but the racism at the heart of the royal family, the headlines were too incessant and explosive to be ignored.

Following a statement made by the Queen, it appears the Royal Family is finally taking such accusations of racism seriously. As Marie Claire reports, “According to sources from inside, Queen Elizabeth II is looking to appoint a “diversity czar” to conduct diversity training around matters of race, sexuality and disability.”

It’s believed the hiring of such a position will coincide with a wider drive across Buckingham Palace to educate and inform all staff on issues of diversity and representation, where they can listen and learn from various experts.

But as many have been quick to point out, this attempt by the Royals to appear on the right side of history and refute criticism from the press is gravely lacking in actual purpose. Many have noted that the very institution of the monarchy is built on racism, colonialism, and the belief that if someone is born to particular parents, they somehow have the inbuilt authority to rule (in fact, one of the contentious issues raised in the interview was the royal family questioning just “how dark” baby Archie’s skin would be, and then later taking away his royal title).

As a palace source told one British tabloid, “This is an issue which has been taken very seriously across the Households. We have the policies, procedures, and programs in place but we haven’t seen the progress we would like and accept more needs to be done. We can always improve. We are not afraid to look at new ways of approaching it. The work to do this has been underway for some time now and comes with the full support of the family.”

Meghan and Harry never disclosed just who it was who voiced such concerns about Archie’s skin, casting a great shadow over those within the Royal Family. Prince Harry has since confirmed that it was not the Queen or her husband, Prince Philip, who made the comments. How the Royal Family navigates the future remains to be seen but at this rate, they are losing the approval of the public at a rapid rate.
