The movie star has two upcoming projects, Little America and The Expendables 4, which are in pre and post production for 2023. Famed for his portrayal of Rocky Balboa in the Rocky films, Stallone has been in the Hollywood hills for five decades. The New Yorker, born in 1946, revealed how his workout regime has changed over the years.

On an Instagram post, he wrote: “I used to work out a lot with weight…

“Your joints start to hurt, your back, knees – it just happens. Sometimes getting into that kind of s**t can kill you.

“So I’ve found a new way to work out… for me, at my age, I’ve found the newest, hardest, toughest, most productive way is bands.”

Stallone is referencing resistance bands, which is utilised for strength training.

He added: “Training with bands, stretching bands, you can get an entire workout done in 20 minutes that is life-changing.

“Aerobic, physical, it’s different… You don’t get bored which is very important.”

The NHS says strength training “will help you increase muscle strength, maintain bone density, improve balance, and reduce joint pain”.

Strength training involves “using your body weight or working against a resistance”.

“You should try to do two sessions or more of muscle strengthening exercises a week,” the NHS recommends.

Examples of muscle-strengthening activities include:

  • Lifting weights
  • Working with resistance bands
  • Heavy gardening, such as digging and shovelling
  • Climbing stairs
  • Hill walking
  • Cycling
  • Dance
  • Push-ups, sit-ups and squats
  • Yoga.

In older age, people are more vulnerable to falls, which can be harmful.

“For an activity to be muscle strengthening, it needs to work your muscles to the point where you may need a short rest before continuing,” the NHS clarifies.

“Muscle-strengthening activities help maintain the ability to perform everyday tasks…

“And slow down the rate of bone and muscle loss associated with ageing.”

Sylvester Stallone starred in Rocky 2, which is showcasing on Monday, November 28, ITV4 at 10.05pm.
