- Peloton has voluntarily recalled first generation pedals on bikes purchased between July 2013 and May 2016.
- The affected pedals carry a significant risk of failure that has already caused injury to over a hundred Peloton members.
- People affected by this recall can request replacement parts online or by calling Peloton support.
On Thursday, Peloton Interactive announced a voluntary recall of a component on its increasingly popular exercise bikes: the PR70P clip-in pedals.
The recall, involving bikes out of warranty and sold between July 2013 and May 2016, will be conducted in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
According to the CPSC recall notice, “PR70P Clip-In Pedals can break unexpectedly during use, causing laceration injuries,” and Peloton “has received 120 consumer reports of pedal breakages, including 16 reports of leg injuries. Five of the injuries required medical care, such as stitches to the lower leg.”
The recall affects about 27,000 bikes, or 54,000 pedals.
What to do if you have recalled pedals
New pedals can be ordered from Peloton by submitting a Pedal Request Form, or simply using the link in the email you may have already received informing you of the recall.
You can also call the company directly at 866-679-9129 or 844-410-0141 to request replacement pedals.
“There is no greater priority than the safety and well-being of Peloton Members,” a Peloton spokesperson told Healthline in an emailed statement. “We take pride in providing the best equipment, proprietary networked software, and world-class streaming digital fitness and wellness content that our Members love.”
The spokesperson also confirmed that they, in cooperation with the CPSC, are participating in a “voluntary recall of PR70P Clip-in pedals originally sold with Bikes between July 2013 and May 2016,” and that the recall only affects “Members who still have their out-of-warranty original pedals on the affected bikes sold in the specific time period.”
How to identify the defective pedals
According to Peloton support, if you purchased one of their bikes anytime between July 2013 and May 2016 and haven’t yet replaced the original first generation pedals, you may be at risk.
These pedals can be easily recognized:
- They carry the Peloton logo.
- The word Peloton is molded into the pedal body.
- An orange Peloton symbol and the word “Peloton” are printed on top of the cleat binding.
More info on the recalled pedal can be found here.
According to Peloton support, “CPSC and Peloton recommend that you immediately stop using your Bike until you install new pedals. We will send replacement pedals out as fast as possible.”
Once the new pedals arrive, you can watch this video to learn how to install them. But if you’re not comfortable performing maintenance on your machine, Peloton will provide a service technician, although you’ll pay about $100 for the service.
However, if your bike has pedals with the word “Peloton” in white lettering without an orange logo, it isn’t subject to the current recall.
Regarding proper maintenance of the bike to reduce pedal failure risk, Peloton recommends that all “Members change their Peloton Bike pedals annually.”
Complaints go back 5 months
In a 5-month-old post, a Reddit user reported her experience with a defective Peloton bike pedal. She described taking her first ride on April 30, after a thorough inspection of the bike’s parts as advised in the welcome packet.
“Everything looked perfect. I even took a leisurely stroll through Paris while wearing socks before clipping in for my real ride!” the Redditor wrote. “Fast forward FIVE MINUTES into my ride, the right pedal SNAPPED CLEAN OFF from the arm while I was standing up riding.”
She posted pictures of the damaged pedal here.
Another Reddit user described how her pedal started clicking and then broke off during the home trial period, and reported that Peloton agreed to extend the trial and send a new part to do a self-repair. The poster next became worried about the warranty because Peloton warned that “an attempt at self repair could void my warranty,” even though the instructions were to complete the repair at home. Pictures of the damaged pedal are posted here.
COVID-19 may delay delivery
If you’re waiting for new pedals to arrive, you might have to be patient.
There was already a backlog on deliveries before the pedal recall, due to the rise in home exercise due to the pandemic, reported Business Insider.
Considering the service costs about $40 per month, after an initial outlay of almost $2,000 for the bike itself, this probably won’t sit well with Peloton members.
The bottom line
In cooperation with the CPSC, Peloton has voluntarily recalled first generation pedals on bikes purchased between July 2013 and May 2016.
The affected pedals carry a significant risk of failure that has already caused injury to over a hundred Peloton members. People affected by this recall can request replacement parts online or by calling Peloton support.
According to user reports on social media, this problem may go back at least 5 months, and the pandemic will likely result in shipping delays that keep some people off their bikes for an extended time.
