Most of us are concerned about our hair and when the luscious locks begin falling out a cause for concern arises. Today, hair loss treatments have become extremely popular, but it is always hard to know which ones actually work. Research has shown that some herbs may help strengthen hair, support scalp health, improve hair thickness, or stimulate the hair growth cycle.
Nettle leaf
According to a 2018 study, nettle leaf extract contains high amounts of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help protect our scalp from damage and stimulate new hair growth.
Nettle leaves are also rich in minerals like iron, magnesium, and zinc, which can all give our follicles a great boost.
Nettles are also rich in antioxidants like carotenoids, flavonoids and vitamin C which act as a shield and protect hair from damaging free radicals.
Free radicals are harmful atoms that are produced in our body, and their number can rise exponentially because of an unhealthy diet, environmental toxins and the most dreaded ageing.
Not only does nettle help in combating hair loss, it can also aid in hair re-growth.
Nettle leaves are rich in silica and sulphur making hair shinier and healthier.
It’s advised to rinse hair with nettle extracts and water results in re-growth of lost hair and also helps in restoring the original hair colour.
Oat straw
Oat straw is a deeply nourishing herb filled with vitamins and minerals particularly silica which helps with thinning hair.
Oat straw is also known to help with itchiness and dandruff.
The herb can be found in supplement form, drank as a tea or it can be applied directly to the scalp.
Dandelion
Dandelions help to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are compounds usually involved in the body’s inflammation.
“There are many different causes of hair loss,” says Dr Deborah Scott, assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School.
“Some are associated with inflammation in the body.”
This is why dandelion root may help with hair loss due to its inflammation fighting capabilities.
Other herbs said to help combat hair regrowth include:
- Brahmi
- Amla Berry
- Rhodiola.
