Around 13 million people in the UK are currently going through either the menopause, or perimenopause (the transition to menopause). It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 when the period stops. Due to the impact this has on the hormones it can have a wide range of side effects.

Speaking on ITV this morning, Doctor Amir outlined some of the symptoms to be aware of, including loss of bladder control and hair loss.

Loss of bladder control

He explained: “You’ve got something in your pelvis called the pelvic floor muscle.

“It’s like a hammock of muscles and tendons that keep your bladder up and everything in place.

“And oestrogen plays a key part in keeping that strong and as you move through the menopause as oestrogen levels drop that muscle can weaken.

“And that can lead to urinary incontinence, it can also lead to prolapse – so the uterus or the bladder coming through the vagina because of the weakened walls there.

“So look online for some pelvic floor exercises.

“There’s some evidence that oestrogen creams help with that as well but speak to your doctor if you’re not sure.”

Hair loss

“Oestrogen helps balance hormones and chemicals that strengthen hair and help hair to grow and when oestrogen levels again your hair may grow slower and thinner,” he said.

“Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be the thing for you.

“Speak to your doctor to find out if it’s the right treatment for you.

“It’s not for everyone, it might not help everyone’s symptoms but it’s always worth going to speak to the doctor and telling them you want to talk about HRT and your health.”
