Green tea is one of the healthiest drinks you can find, but versatile tea can also be used on your face and hair. You’ll find green tea extracts in a number of different products on the market, but why waste money when you can get the benefits straight from the bag? Express.co.uk chatted to tea expert Ketan Desai, Chief Educator at VAHDAM India to find out the five ways to use green tea in your beauty regime.
Green tea is an antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, so it makes just as much sense to use it on your face as it does to drink it.
Chief Educator at VAHDAM with more than 30 years of experience in tea, Ketan Desai, said: “While drinking green tea has a plethora of health benefits to offer, applying it on the skin and
hair is equally amazing.
“Green tea contains tannin, an astringent that miraculously shrinks the skin and it’s also useful on hair.”
Express.co.uk reveals the five ways you can use green tea in your beauty regime, according to Ketan.
Eye mask
Do you suffer from puffy eyes or dark circles? Don’t waste your money on expensive gel eye masks, just use green tea bags.
Mr Ketan said: “The cool tea bags reduce the swelling around your eyes, help remove dark circles and tighten the skin, making you look and feel fabulous.”
It is believed the caffeine in green tea may help to narrow the blood vessels around your eyes and constrict the flow, bringing down the appearance of puffiness or darkness.
Scrub
If you remove the contents of two green tea bags, you could make a really effective scrub.
Mr Ketan explained: “Since green tea helps tighten the skin, making a green tea facial scrub out of the used tea is very good for the face.”
Combine the green tea or one tablespoon of green tea leaves with some sugar and water in a bowl and mix until you make a paste.
Leave it on as a mask and then rinse it off to reveal softer, firmer skin.
Toner
Traditional toner seems to have fallen out of favour over the years as AHA and BHA acid toners have taken the winning spot, but you can make your own at home for a much cheaper price using green tea.
As Mr Ketan explained, green tea is an astringent which means it is slightly acidic and causes the contraction of skin cells.
To make a toner that is gentle on all skin types, make a cup of plain green tea with some filtered water and let it steep for up to 10 minutes.
Remove the teabag and pop the tea in an airtight container or a clean spray bottle.
Leave the toner in the fridge to cool down and use it within two weeks.
Cleanse your skin and then pat the toner into your skin with a cotton pad before moisturising.
Lip balm
Our lips always dry out and even start to chap in the winter, but green tea could help.
Mr Ketan said: “Green tea is said to alleviate the sting of dry and chapped lips.
“All you need to do is to apply a green tea bag that is soaked in warm water over your lips.”
Hair
Green tea isn’t just great on your skin, you can use it as a rinse on your hair.
Mr Ketan noted: “A green tea rinse is good for your mane as well and gives your hair a great shine.”
Just like the TikTok famous rice water rinse hack, you can spray green tea onto your hair and leave it on for at least 30 minutes.
Then rinse it off, use a conditioner and either let your hair dry naturally or blow dry it.
