Diabetes type 2 – the best spice to lower your risk of high blood sugar symptoms

Diabetes is a common condition that affects more than four million people in the UK, and 90 per cent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. You could lower your risk of high blood sugar by regularly eating fenugreek, it’s been claimed.

Type 2 diabetes could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.

Without enough of the hormone, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into usable energy.

It’s crucial, if you think you may have diabetes, to speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

One of the easiest ways to lower your chances of high blood sugar is to add fenugreek to your diet.

Fenugreek is an aromatic plant that’s become a key part of curries and other Indian cuisine meals.

The plant can be sold in two forms; either as leaves, or as seeds.

The seeds can be mashed down into powdered form, which is used as a spice.

Fenugreek seeds are rich in soluble foods, which slows down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates.

The seeds could benefit diabetes patients, as the slower digestion may help to prevent blood sugar spikes.

“Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an aromatic herb with a strong, curry-like scent and flavour,” said registered nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.

She wrote on her website, DrSarahBrewer.com: “Fenugreek seed contains an amino acid called 4-hydroxyisoleucine which is known to increase the response to insulin hormone and reduce insulin resistance. The results from 12 studies show that, in people with type 2 diabetes, fenugreek supplements significantly decrease fasting blood glucose levels, HbA1c and total cholesterol levels.”

But, before you use fenugreek to treat your diabetes, you should speak to your doctor.

Adding too much fenugreek to your diet could cause your blood sugar levels to dip too low.

Meanwhile, you could also lower your risk of high blood sugar by eating more cinnamon.

Cinnamon could lower your insulin resistance, which improves the amount of sugar that’s making its way into the muscles and fat cells.

Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the signs and symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.

Common diabetes symptoms include feeling very tired, having an unquenchable thirst, and passing more urine than normal.

You should speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the warning signs or symptoms of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.

Diagnosing the condition early is very important, because patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart disease and strokes.
