Robert Downey Jr. Shared the Workout He Used to Train for Avengers: Infinity War

It’s been nearly two years since we last saw Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it seems he’s already feeling a little nostalgic for his Avenging days. In a post shared to Instagram this week, Downey shared a couple of throwback gym videos from back when he was busy preparing for the action-heavy blockbuster crossover film, Avengers: Infinity War.

Wearing the kind of color-coordinated Adidas athleisure that Stark himself would be proud of, Downey can be seen performing a total body workout, with exercises targeting the beck, chest, legs and core. In the first slide, he’s doing the leg press; in the second, he performs cable flys; the third is a T-Bar row; and the fourth video shows him working on an AbSolo machine.

This is an ab-training system which involves throwing balls at a target while in the upper end of a situp. The AbSolo retails at around $2,500, but if you don’t have the budget of a Stark Industries CEO, you can easily recreate the exercise by throwing balls at a wall during your next situp session.

Interestingly, unlike his MCU cohorts like Thor and Captain America, Tony Stark is not a preternaturally ripped character; his super-heroics come from his intellect and gadgets, and this is reflected in the workout. While the Chrises Hemsworth, Evans and Pratt underwent intense body transformations while preparing for their roles, Downey’s session focuses more on insuring he hits all his key muscle groups, using equipment you’ll find in most big-box gyms.
