Hair strands become smaller and have less pigment with many hair follicles not being able to produce new hairs. When this occurs using either a garlic gel or drinking garlic juice could help increase your hair growth. How?
Some of garlic’s nutritional benefits may extend to your hair.
Raw garlic is high in vitamins and minerals including vitamins B-6 and C, manganese, and selenium all of which promote healthy hair.
Natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties found in garlic may also contribute to the benefits for hair, as these properties can help kill bacteria and fight germs, keeping you and your scalp healthy.
One study found that garlic protected keratinocytes from UV damage and showed promise as an anti-aging material.
Keratinocytes are skin cells that produce keratin.
These cells are on the outer layer of your skin, including the skin on your scalp, and in your hair follicles.
In another study it was found that garlic helped participants with alopecia areata.
Participants applied the garlic gel to their bald spots on their scalp and saw an improvement in hair regrowth.

Garlic has a strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effect.
As hair loss can result from an infection of the skin or hair follicles, applying garlic juice to the scalp could be very effective at bringing any infections under control and restoring balance.
Garlic is also a good source of the mineral selenium, another important mineral for healthy hair.
By simply consuming garlic one would have to eat a lot to gain the full hair benefits however by drinking garlic juice the required amount is fulfilled due to it being more concentrated.
In a study published in the Indian journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, the use of garlic for hair growth was further investigated.
The study found that an application of five percent gel to areas where hair loss had taken place led to hair regrowth in the previously bald areas of the scalp
A reduction in size of bald patches and higher hair count numbers was also evident.
As per the study, the sulphur and selenium contained in garlic was found to help fortify the structure of the hair shaft.
Five benefits of using garlic for hair include:
- Garlic has anti-microbial properties that help kill germs and bacteria, which are responsible for causing damage to the scalp, further inhibiting hair growth.
- Raw garlic is known to be rich in vitamin C content that is great for promoting hair-health. It also boosts collagen production that helps stimulate hair growth.
- The presence of selenium content in garlic helps boost blood circulation for maximum nourishment.
- It also helps cleanse hair follicles, strengthens them and prevents clogging, further curbing hair loss.
- Garlic helps calm aggravated scalp and treats issues like dandruff.
