Covid vaccines have paved the way for restriction-free life in the UK, with Brits looking forward to July 19. But the AstraZeneca jab has come with some controversy, first reports of rare blood clots, and now the EU’s pending approval of a manufacturing site. Although developed in the UK, the pharmaceutical giant has development sites around the world.
Where are the AstraZeneca vaccines made?
The AstraZeneca jab was developed by the pharmaceutical company in partnership with Oxford University.
The jab remains one of three currently available for people in the UK and the only candidate created locally.
But it has bases and links to many other countries and across continents.
As a Swedish and British pharmaceutical corporation, AstraZeneca has manufacturing sites scattered around the world.
The company’s base is in Cambridge, with Research and Development sites across Europe and the US.
AstraZeneca boasts it has “manufacturing capacity” in 15 countries and 25 sites.
While some of these sites will manufacture jabs, not all of them do.

People don’t need to know the exact manufacture site of their jab.
Instead, they need to find the relevant batch number for one or both of their vaccines.
Vaccinated people will have taken a vaccine card after their appointment with the batch number written.
Officials have identified three as indicative of the Serum Institute of India (SII) Covishield version.
The vaccine batch numbers include:
- 4120Z001
- 4120Z002
- 4120Z003
Despite rumours, the Government has said it would attempt to ensure people who have received the jab can travel to the EU.
Downing Street said it would work to ensure “safe and open travel” to the bloc.
