Comedian Kathy Griffin, 60, shared with her social media followers on Monday morning that she was recently diagnosed with Stage 1 lung cancer, and is undergoing surgery to remove half of her left lung. She shared the details about her prognosis and treatments with her followers.

“I’ve got to tell you guys something. I have cancer. I’m about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed. Yes, I have lung cancer even though I’ve never smoked!” she wrote on Twitter and Instagram. “The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage one and contained to my left lung. Hopefully no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing. I should be up and running around as usual in a month or less.”

She also shared with her followers that she is fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and encouraged her followers to continue to get medical checkups.

“It’s been a helluva 4 years, trying to get back to work, making you guys laugh and entertaining you, but I’m gonna be just fine,” she continued, adding, “Of course I am fully vaccinated for Covid. The consequences for being unvaccinated would have been even more serious. Please stay up to date on your medical check ups. It’s save your life. XXOO, KG.”

Kathy got lots of supportive comments from her famous friends.

Actress Andie MacDowell commented, “Wow So brave❤️ My heart is wide-open for you
Thank God you found it early and a safe recovery.” Amy Shumer commented, “Love you Kathy!!!! You got this!” And Rosie O’Donnell commented, “u got this griffin ❤️❤️❤️.”

As Kathy mentioned, although she’s never smoked, she was still diagnosed with lung cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, causes of lung cancer besides smoking can include: exposure to secondhand smoke, family history, previous radiation therapy, exposure to radon gas, asbestos and other carcinogens such as arsenic, chromium and nickel.

And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 10% to 20% of lung cancers (or 20,000 to 40,000 lung cancers each year) happen in people who never smoked or smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime in the United States.

You can tune in tonight for an in-depth interview on ABC News’ Nightline (12:35 a.m. ET on ABC), where Kathy spoke with co-anchor Juju Chang, where she shared in a clip from the sit-down that she is “still a little bit in shock” after finding out the news.

“Really just days ago — like, I think two weeks ago — I was diagnosed with cancer. As a friend of mine had said, ‘How many kicks in the nuts can you take?’ My nuts are pretty strong, but it’s a challenge,” she says. “I was definitely in shock. I’m still a little bit in shock — not denial, but once a day I’ll just turn to like, nobody next to me and go, ‘Can you believe this s—? Is this a bitch or what?'”
