When he visited the doctors late in 2014, Dickinson’s doctor found something “a bit weird”. There were two tumours sitting on the back of his tongue, one the size of a golf ball, he told the BBC around the time.
After the doctor scanned the rockstar and “had a poke around” he was told he had head and neck cancer.
The legend, whose band was formed in 1975 in East London, was later treated with radiation for the condition.
“You can imagine to get rid of that with radiation – the inside of my head has been cooked pretty effectively,” he said.
Dickinson, who was officially given the all-clear by specialists in 2015 after MRI scans, has spoken about his ordeal in public recently.
Talking at a spoken-word show in Florida last month, he said: “The things they have to do to your body to get rid of it are getting better and better and better as we go down the line.
“They did some nasty things to my body. I’m lucky I’m completely clear of it and everything.”
Radiation therapy, which is used in the early stages of cancer, involves using radiation to kill cancer cells.
It can be used, according to the NHS, to cure cancer completely or to supplement other surgeries.
Moreover, it can reduce the risk of cancer coming back after surgery.
In his show, he was quick to commend modern advances in medicine.
“I have to say that the therapies that people are coming up with now are so on the edge and successful that you really do stand a very good chance,” he said.
“Because half of us are gonna get cancer, and it’s not a death sentence anymore, and you can deal with it,” he added.
The symptoms of laryngeal (throat) cancer, according to the NHS, is having a “hoarse voice” for over three weeks.
Other symptoms include:
- pain and/or difficulty when swallowing
- a lump or swelling in your neck
- long-lasting cough or breathlessness
- persistent sore throat or earache
- a high-pitched wheezing noise when you breathe
- in severe cases, difficulty breathing
Recently, Iron Maiden released a new album called Senjutsu and have been touring as per usual.
The band are expected to headline Download Festival 2022 on Saturday, June 11th.
There are several factors that can increase the risk of getting laryngeal cancer.
Some of the main risk factors include regularly drinking large amounts of alcohol and smoking tobacco.
Bruce Dickinson confirmed in an interview with music publication Billboard that he does not smoke.
You should visit your GP if you notice any new symptoms and signs that are persistent.
